I had the pleasure of getting close to Barbara when we both lived in Elkin.  I taught 2 of her 3 children.  Her son Bart (Daniel) was one of my son's best friends, and she kept him after preschool when I was teaching.  But her biggest asset was her big heart.  She mentored so many young people in Elkin and was their second mother in a lot of cases.  Barbara was outspoken in a kind way and served her community so well.  She will be missed.
