Sparky Brooks (Class of 67)

 

Although I had known Joe since my high school years, our friendship really blossomed when he and his wife Marion made the decision to relocate back to his hometown of Lexington.  I am so glad he did.  Joe became a valued member of our monthly poker group, and his addition brought a witty, sometimes sarcastic jesting, but always fun filled evening of wisdom and laughter.  Joe had a brilliant mind and could lead a discussion on any topic brought up before the group. He loved to engage in friendly banter among our group.  Joe and I shared a huge passion for great food, and would often discuss our newest "must try" places to dine.  Joe was never afraid to make fun of himself, and in fact seemed to enjoy doing so sometimes.  He and Marion played off each other's quick witted responses to each other often.  I had so much fun listening to Marion's comebacks at some of Joe's remarks during poker events at Joe's house.  I already miss Joe Hankins, and will feel a huge emptiness when our card game resumes this month with another empty chair at the table.  Joe is our third member who has left our group way to soon.  Our group always honors our passed members by playing their favorite hand at least once per meeting.  You can bet we will deal Up and Down the River in Joe's honor, because we know he will be watching us and laughing at us, because Joe usually lost at that game.  Now it is our loss.  Missing you buddy!
